LANSING, MI – James Watson was watching football and enjoying a quiet evening when he won a $ 5,000 jackpot playing the Michigan Lottery Power 777 instant game. Or at least, that’s what the 65-year-old from Van Buren County thought he won.
âI buy tickets for $ 20 at a time and scratch them at night when I’m relaxing,â Watson said. âI had a football game and decided to withdraw my tickets. I wasn’t wearing my glasses and I had what looked like a $ 5,000 winner. I was so excited; I called a buddy to tell him and he asked me to bring the ticket so he could see it.
âThe next morning, I went to my friend’s house, and I stopped at the BP to show them the ticket. The clerk scanned it and said, âJames, you’ll have to go to Lansing for this one. It’s a winner of $ 500,000!
âWhen she said that, I couldn’t catch my breath and almost fell backwards in the store!
Watson bought his ticket at the BP gas station, located at 122 Phoenix Street in South Haven, and recently went to the lottery headquarters in Lansing to claim his prize. With his earnings, he plans to buy a property, a new car and save the rest.

The latest Michigan player to win a Mega Millions or Powerball jackpot was Wolverine FLL Lottery Club which won a jackpot of $ 1.05 billion in March. With their earnings, the group plans to give back to the community.
And while they were lucky winners, it’s a good idea for players to check their tickets immediately, as a winner worth $ 1 million sold to Hartland in 2019 has not been claimed. The ticket was purchased at Hartland Speedway, but the winner never showed up to claim the prize. Instead, the money went to the State Educational Assistance Fund.
