An Indian driver based in Dubai won 12 million dirhams (Rs 21,24,77,149) in the Big Ticket roundup which took place at Abu Dhabi International Airport.

John Varughese is originally from the town of Aranmula in the Pathanamthitta district of Kerala and works as a driver for a private company. When John got the call from the organizers, he refused to believe his luck. In fact, he thought a friend of his was playing a prank on him at the end of April Fool’s Day.

Despite obtaining confirmation, he was still worried about informing his family in Kerala.

John had started buying tickets last year. Sometimes he bought the tickets on his own, but sometimes with his friends. The money for his winning ticket 093395 will be shared with four other friends who pooled Dh500 to buy the ticket.

John does not intend to return to Kerala but wants to invest his share of the money in the education of his children. He also intends to set aside some to help the needy. “I shouldn’t forget my days gone by,” John told the Khaleej Times.

Yet the new multimillionaire wants to switch from his basic phone to a smartphone. Before that, John has a bigger job to do. Count them all!
