Hospice Saint-Joseph is celebrating the 1,000th draw for its fundraising lottery, which will take place on Friday, November 27.

The lottery was created to raise valuable funds for the Thornton Hospice, Merseyside. It has a weekly jackpot of £ 1,000, as well as other cash prizes, and the very first draw was on October 5, 2001

Today, the St. Joseph’s Hospice Lottery has nearly 6,000 active members and has raised over £ 3million for the Hospice, which provides compassionate end-of-life care to over 200 patients. from Merseyside every year, as well as support and comfort for their families. .

Maureen Roach (89) from Kirkdale, was one of the very first people to enter the lottery in 2001 and also won the £ 1,000 jackpot.

She said, “I have supported St. Joseph’s Hospice since Father O’Leary’s lifetime. My sister-in-law died in the hospice and my husband and I were visiting her. We joined the lottery because it was a great way to give something back to the charity for all they have done for our family.

“My husband and son passed away a few years ago, but not at the hospice, but it comforts me to know that through the lottery I am helping other families and patients.

“I always used to go to the hospice on Christmas to remember my family at Light up a Life and we always gave them dedications every Christmas.”

Maxine Armstrong, Fundraising and Lottery Manager at St. Joseph’s Hospice, said, “Our lottery is such an important part of our fundraising strategy. It only costs £ 1 a week to play, but it’s so valuable as it provides us with a regular income that allows us to plan and budget for the future too, so it has a really long term benefit for the hospice.

“We have set ourselves a goal of increasing our lottery membership to 10,000, so if you are interested in supporting a valuable local charity, please consider joining the Hospice Lottery. It’s a lot of fun and you might even hit the jackpot! “
