Raleigh, North Carolina – Durham’s Terry Coggeshall and his wife have been using the same number set to play the lottery for 26 years, and those numbers on Wednesday earned them a Cash 5 jackpot of $ 366,673.
“These are my wife’s numbers that we’ve been playing for 26 years,” Coggeshall said. “We started playing them in Florida when we lived there.”
Coggeshall, who works as a delivery coordinator, purchased his winning Cash 5 ticket at the Harris Teeter on West Barbee Chapel Road in Chapel Hill.
The couple watched the drawing live in their living room on Wednesday evening. “I was in the La-Z-Boy as she stood there watching,” he recalls. “And she started to scream. She says: “I won, I won! And I say ‘What ?!’ ”
Coggeshall said their lucky numbers had “brought them together several times”. To win the jackpot, their ticket broke odds of 1 in 962,598.
“We never really thought we would get all of this,” he said as he claimed his prize at lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Thursday. “I can’t wait to see my wife’s face when she looks at the check.”
After the required federal and state withholding taxes, he won $ 259,425.
“It’s very exciting,” Coggeshall said. “It takes a lot of stress away. It will be a good sum to set aside to help with retirement.
Carolina Cash 5 tickets cost $ 1 and there are raffles every night. Friday’s jackpot is $ 110,000.
Cash 5 is one of four lottery games in North Carolina where players have the option to purchase their tickets through online play, either through the lottery website or through the official mobile app of the NC lottery.
Ticket sales from raffle games like Cash 5 raise the lottery more than $ 725 million per year for education.
