NORTH CAROLINA (QUEEN CITY NEWS) – Unfortunately, North Carolina didn’t have any billion-dollar Mega Millions winners this weekend, but it did have several who took home a good chunk of change .
Two of the 26 people who won a million dollar prize bought their tickets in North Carolina. You had to match all five white numbers to win this prize.
One of these winners bought their ticket from Adam’s Mart on Elm Lane in Ballantyne; the other bought theirs at Shop N Save on Mecklenburg Highway in Mooresville. The North Carolina Education Lottery said a $20,000 Megaplier ticket was also sold in Statesville at the Quality Mart on Old Mountain Road.
Nurten Ertas, assistant manager of Adam’s Mart, said a customer buys a Mega Millions ticket every Friday.
“I was shocked because I didn’t expect it, I guess. So many people are playing, but I didn’t think anyone was going to win in our store,” she said.
This isn’t the first time Adam’s Mart has sold a lucky ticket. In 2021, he sold a Powerball ticket worth $100,000. Still, Friday’s price blew that one out of the water.
“I’m not surprised. I’ve been here for a few weeks. Literally everyone who’s been here has bought a lottery ticket,” said Adam’s Mart customer Daniel Carter.
With the draw now over, Adam’s Mart was busy on Saturday with customers coming to check their tickets.
“I disappeared for a few days, I was looking for how to position myself financially, I had everything related to investments. That way, if anyone ever asks me for money, I can’t really give it to them,” Nicolai Busk said.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t Busk’s lucky day, but he did make some money at Adam’s Mart.
“A guy bought three tickets in front of me. So did one of the scratches. So, I thought I might as well buy one after him since the odds might be in my favor. I ended up make $50 on a $5 bill,” he said.
According to the NCEL, state retailers only receive a bonus when a jackpot is sold in Powerball or Mega Millions games. If a business sold a jackpot ticket, they would receive an incentive of $50,000. Retailers who sell scratch tickets worth at least $1 million receive a $10,000 incentive. That said, any business that sells lottery tickets can keep 7% of the ticket price.
Anyone who won a prize in Friday’s draw has 180 days to claim it.
